On Friday, June 5th, Live at the Landmark! presents a live concert and dance featuring the premiere Cuban dance bands in the nation….Orquesta La Moderna Tradición. All of this wrapped up in the majestic 1920’s Landmark Ballroom. For those who like to dance, you will not find a better dance floor (3,000 square feet of “sprung” maple floor). So join us for this rare opportunity to dress to the 9’s, dance all night and enjoy a world-class Cuban salsa performance!

Orquesta La Moderna Tradición - From the first note you will want to jump out of your seat. This 12-piece ensemble captures the romance and style of a memorable era in Cuban dance music by transporting you to the time of sensual danzónes and swinging cha-chas — the music of the Havana social clubs of the 1950s. They are the only band in the United States that plays this type of danzón and Cuban music. Violins and flutes weave lilting melodies against the backdrop of driving Afro-Cuban rhythms. The orchestra’s repertoire ranges from traditional ballads to the latest salsa and timba grooves with surprising twists (you should hear their spin on the old church tune “Golden Slippers”). As one critic put it, “Imagine a blend of Tito Puente and a tango and you'll begin to get an idea of the power and beauty of this music.”

On Saturday, June 6th, Live at the Landmark! presents a live concert and dance featuring West Coast’s top-notch American roots music and western swing king Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, in addition to special guests performances from the Cottonpickers and Lady A and her Heel Draggers, plus DJs Vida Lee and Miss Cherry Bomb. All of this is wrapped up in the majestic 1920’s Landmark Ballroom. For those who like to dance, you will not find a better dance floor (3,000 square feet of specially “sprung” dance floor). So join us for this opportunity to dress to the 9’s, dance all night and enjoy one of the best music acts in the region!

Since forming in 1988, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have emerged as one of the world's most respected practitioners of American roots music, western swing, rockabilly, and traditional country—playing it as if they invented it. "I think of us as just a rock and roll band, a rock and roll band that's letting the roots show," says bandleader Big Sandy. Whether they are playing the Grand Ole Opry, Late Night With Conan O'Brien, or simply climbing out of a bus after rolling into your town, these guys are bringing us some great old-time rock and roll.

For many acts playing music of this era, there is a tendency to look no further than the novelty of the style. Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, however, have continued to transcend their genre the same way all iconic artists do—by creating music so good, songs that are so well written, that the genre is simply a launching pad for the integrity of the art; this music is timeless. "Well, it's become that," Big Sandy said. "Once we got comfortable with the style of music we were playing, we made it our own."

The Cottonpickers – Red Hot Honkey Tonk…the band uses traditional country instrumentation - fiddle, pedal steel guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, acoustic guitar and drums.  The music is in line with the Buck Owens Bakersfield sound, with a touch of Bluegrass, Rock, Cajun and Western Swing.

Lady A & her Heel Draggers are an up-and-coming, SF-based Western Swing band formed by members of several prominent area Roots-Americana groups, including the Mad Cow String Band, Five Dollar Suit, and the Real Sippin' Whiskeys. The Heel Draggers focus on the sounds of the classic era of Western Swing and Honky Tonk when country music still swung hard and had more than 3 chords. This high-energy music keeps fans dancing and drinking. The band features steel guitar, accordion, fiddle, upright bass, guitar, drums, and of course, powerful vocals from the lovely Lady A.

KAWEH QUINTET CONCERT

Doors: 7:00 PM
Show: 8:00 PM
Admission:  $16 Advance  Link button to purchase ticket: http://www.artsopolis.com/org/detail/8905

Nothing unites an ethnically diverse group quite like music! KAWEH attracts a multi-cultural audience. Primarily Spanish guitar based, the group fuses Flamenco Rumba with Latin, Brazilian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern rhythms and melodies. "The rich acoustic guitar, passionate rhythms and international flair of the music, reaches out to everyone, regardless of age or style preference." - Mountain View Ala Carte & Art Festival .

KAWEH’s musicians are as diverse as their compositions.  With members hailing from as far as the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and Israel it’s no wonder why fans are attracted to their sound.  KAWEH independently released 5 albums and sold thousands of copies world wide.  The ensemble recently returned from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where they performed at a Colin Cowie (Event Planer to the Stars) event with Julio Iglesias. Their 2009 West Coast tour is a cultural, musical travelogue taking the group from Southern California to Seattle, WA.   “Just as leafing through an atlas can transport you from one region of the world to another, in the flip of a few pages, so too does KAWEH's music.” - Bay Area MetroActive.
